The Crow's Nest

Welcome to the official first day of spring. Spring arrived in Edinburg at precisely 7:07 last night. Too Tall Tom told me this and I believe him. (He is one of our local TV Weathermen.) There have been signs of spring – we saw a robin last week out in western North Dakota and also geese flying north. The weather has been quite unpredictable and that is another sure sign of spring. All of these happenings assure me that soon there will be green grass to mow and daffodils and tulips to enjoy. I can hardly wait!

Chuck and I just got back from a ski trip to Big Sky, Montana. We both love the landscape of that area in the Rocky Mountains. This was a special trip for us because we took “Flat Stanley” along for the ride. For those of you who don’t know, Flat Stanley is the name of a book written by Jeff Brown and read by elementary school children throughout the United States. In the book Stanley is flattened by a bulletin board and consequently, has many adventures. In the book he was even mailed to California to visit a friend. Our grand daughter, Madison Rilee, asked us to take Flat Stanley (she re-named him/her “Flat Madi”) on an adventure. That we did. Flat Madi went skiing high in the Rockies, visited Medora and even went to see the traveling “King Tut” exhibit at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman. Her adventure was documented with many pictures. Grandpa Chuck grumbled once in a while having to get out and stand by road signs while I took pictures, but that is okay. We had a wonderful time with our daughter, Kris and her family and her husband Jason’s family.

We returned to Edinburg just in time to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. The Business Club sponsored a dinner and dance for the public. Bernice Flanagan contacted “Matt and the Dakota Dutchmen” from Lankin to provide the old time music. Shepherd’s Pie was served along with cole slaw, rolls and dessert. I think about 85 people were in attendance and everyone seemed to have a very good time. We were completing with many activities that evening to include the Class B State Championship Basketball game. People came from Lankin, Fordville, Gardar, Mountain, Grafton, Park River and Edinburg to enjoy food and to polka.

I understand the Benefit Dance the “Nowatzki Guys” – known as GRAMPA’S AMP was quite successful and they may come back to Edinburg again. What a wonderful gesture for these guys to bring their band to Edinburg to benefit our 125th Celebration this summer. I wish I would have been here to hear them. I am leaving their website up for everyone to peruse.

Amanda Sondeland told me the other day the Adams-Edinburg prom is April 14th. Wow! That is just around the corner. I am sure all the girls are busily looking for that perfect dress to go with that perfect date. Even after almost 50 years I remember the excitement of prom time. Just hope the weather will cooperate.

Harold and Alida Flom returned from wintering in Texas a couple of weeks ago. Alida said she has been substitute teaching almost every day since returning home.

Our sympathy to Agnes and Arnold Bjerke on the death of Helmer Severson. Helmer was raised in the Edinburg area but had lived for many years in Kansas City. Also, I am keeping close to my heart a dear, dear family member, Ingrid Johnson who has battled cancer for 10 years and is going through some tough times right now. I have never met a more positive person in my life. Ingrid always has a smile on her face. We love you Ingrid.
